Jean Taylor

May 31, 1930 — July 19, 2025

Chickasha

A Celebration of life for Ermyl Frances (Jean) Taylor will be held Thursday July 24, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the College Heights Baptist Church in Chickasha with Dr. Bryan Haynes officiating and Mike Butler assisting.

Jean Taylor was born May 31, 1930, in Tabler, Oklahoma, the daughter of James Harlan Newton and Bertie Mae Newton. She passed from this life on Saturday July 19, 2025, at her home surrounded by her children and other family members.

Jean grew up near Tabler and attended school in Middleburg. She graduated from Middleburg High School in 1948. On July 27, 1948, she married her high school sweetheart Hurshel Taylor. She was not afraid of hard work, and together they farmed and ran a dairy operation for many years. After they retired, she started a daycare in her home where she took care of many of her grandchildren and other children who still call her “Grandma Jean” to this day.

Jean enjoyed raising a garden and working outside in her flower beds. She particularly loved red roses, and they were always beautiful. Jean was also a wonderful cook. Her specialty was her Coconut Cream Pies! When she would donate some for an auction people would bid ridiculously high prices to secure one. Every Christmas, in addition to her pies you could count on her making delicious German Chocolate Cake, chocolate fudge, peanut brittle and peanut patties.

She was a member of the Spring Creek home extension club for many years and was also a very good seamstress. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends particularly when they got together to play dominoes. In her early years she enjoyed watching Am-Po basketball games but recently the Oklahoma City Thunder was her favorite team to watch.

She spent many years serving in her church wherever she was needed. She was currently a member of College Heights Baptist Church and had told her family several times that she was ready to go to her heavenly home!

Jean was preceded and death by both parents: husband, Hurshel Taylor; son, Dwight Taylor; sister, Kathy Feroli; brother, James Newton and sister Marie Bento.

Loved ones left to remember her are her daughter, Janon Howard and husband Tom of Oklahoma City; son, Steve Taylor and wife Beverly of Amber; daughter, Rhonda Boyd and husband Mike of Chickasha; sister, Margie Howe of Chickasha; sister, Lula Bonds of Alex; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and numerous extended family members and friends.

The viewing for Jean will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Ferguson Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with family present to receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
