Colleen Kay Whitfield was born on December 4, 1940, in Emporia, Kansas, to Paul David Detter and Ella Ruth (Morgan) Detter. She passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Colleen grew up in Cyril, Oklahoma, where she graduated from high school in 1958. It was there that she met the love of her life, Charles William Whitfield. The two were married on June 12, 1959, at the First Christian Church in Cyril, Oklahoma.
In 1960, they made their home in Duncan, Oklahoma, where they began raising their family. Colleen’s greatest joys were her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She initially stayed at home to care for her young daughters and later worked various jobs as they grew older. Colleen became the secretary of the First Christian Church in Duncan, where she served for several years before transitioning to the role of Director of The First Christian Church Day Care Center. Later, she became the Director of Volunteer Services at Duncan Regional Hospital, retiring in 2000. Throughout her life, Colleen was deeply involved in many church activities and formed lasting friendships. She was known for her outgoing, loving, and caring nature—traits that drew people to her. Those who met her quickly became lifelong friends, and she was adored by all who knew her.
In 2015, Colleen and Charles moved to New Albany, Ohio, to be closer to their daughter, Lori. She became a member of New Life Church in Gahanna, Ohio, in 2016, where she remained until 2024 when she returned to Oklahoma.
Colleen was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Charles in 2020, and her sisters Marilyn Smith and Margie Gaines.
She is survived by her daughters Lori McClaskey and husband Paul of New Albany, Ohio, and Angela Giddens and husband Devin of Edmond, Oklahoma; her sisters Dorothy Heavin and Pauline Cobb; her grandchildren Lauren Payne and husband David, Andy McClaskey and wife Kristen, Elisabeth McClaskey, Madeline Giddens, and Margo Giddens; and her great-grandchildren Brayden Payne, Gavin Payne, Emmalynn Payne, Caroline Payne, Adeline McClaskey, Kaleb McClaskey, Aubrey McClaskey, and William (Giddens) Sullivan. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and a host of wonderful friends.
